1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Your Turkish Airlines flight is delayed.

What should you do next? What are your rights in these situations? Could you be entitled to Turkish Airline compensation for delay?

1.1 If you are still at home

If you are still at home or hotel, stay there for a while.

First of all, check your flight status online, to find out, if possible, is it going to be a long delay. Go to the website of the airport, Turkish Airlines website or use sites like Flightstats. Next, contact Turkish Airlines or airport information desk to find out if check in is happening as planned or is it postponed. So you know if to wait or proceed to the airport as planned.

If check in for your flight is postponed, stay at home or hotel.

If it isn’t postponed, head to the airport as planned.

Do you have a connecting flight?

If it’s a connecting flight with Turkish Airlines, you are protected.

Turkish Airlines is a full service airline, and as a such it offers protected connecting flights. That means you are protected against flight delays and cancellations. If you will miss a connecting flight Turkish Airlines will take care of that — mostly, according to the Turkish Airlines missed flight policy, you will be offered another flight completely for free.

If it is a self transfer flight (you booked flights separately) — it is your responsibility. If you will miss your next flight, it will be your responsibility to buy yourself a new flight or flights.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

Find out if check in has already started.

Find it out even if you don’t need it anymore.

If check in is postponed, for now just wait. Because you never know what will happen next. It may end up being a very long flight delay or your flight may as well get cancelled. That's why it is better just to wait for a while.

If check in has already started, go and check in, and proceed to your boarding gate as you would normally do. If you don’t know the gate number yet, proceed through airport security and wait there. Check airport flight information screens every once in a while, to stay updated with what is happening with your Turkish Airlines flight. You'll submit Turkish Airlines compensation claim form later (if it's a 3+ hour flight delay).

- 3 hour flight delay

Turkish Airlines is not a European airline.

But it doesn’t mean that you aren't protected.

If the flight is departing from Europe, you are still under the EU protection. In some situations you will even be entitled to flight compensation. If your Turkish Airlines flight is delayed, and you have to wait at the airport 3 or more hours extra, you are entitled to two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes and a free meal and drink.

It is Turkish Airlines responsibility to provide all of this.

In this case it doesn’t even matter if delay is their fault or not.

All thanks to Europe's Flight Compensation Regulation EC 261/2004.

If you haven’t received any of that, contact Turkish Airlines.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

What if it is going to be a very long flight delay?

What if it is going to be an overnight delay?

Will you have to stay at the airport overnight? If it is a flight that departed from Europe, mostly you will not. Because Turkish Airlines will provide you also with free hotel accommodation.

It is their responsibility to take care of you.

All passengers have the right to care.

It doesn’t matter if you have a travel insurance or not, or how much does your flight cost. All that matters is that the flight departed from the EU or elsewhere where the above mentioned Regulation EC 261/2004 is in effect. Here it is also worth mentioning that accepting any or all of this doesn’t affect your chances of getting Turkish Airlines compensation for delay.

1.3 If it's fault of Turkish Airlines

You might be entitled to EU flight delay compensation.

If it is their fault you might as well receive compensation.

For example, nationwide strikes, extreme weather conditions and political instability aren’t considered airlines responsibility, at the same time technical problems mostly are considered airline’s fault.

All you have to do is file a claim — to ask for the money.

If you file a claim, you may be receiving up to €600.

Sometimes even a 2 hour flight delay is enough for you to be entitled to compensation in the end, but mostly your flight must be 3 or more hours late for you to be entitled to Turkish Airlines flight delays compensation. When in doubts, register your flight with us and we will check it.

Have you experienced a flight delay?

If you have — file a compensation claim.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

What are your rights in these situations?

What should you do if your Turkish Airlines flight is cancelled? How to get a refund from Turkish Airlines if your flight is cancelled? Compensation?

2.1 If you are still at home

Most likely you have received an e-mail from Turkish Airlines.

If it is a flight from Europe, the rules are very specific.

The rules are the same even if your flight is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances. If a flight is cancelled airline has to offer you a choice between a new flight and refund.

How to get a refund from Turkish Airlines?

If you don’t want a new flight, ask for a refund. That is as simple as that. It is your rights. Refer to Regulation EC 261/2004 of the European Union.

One more thing to remember — according to the same regulation, this refund must be paid in cash or by bank transfer, not in coupons, miles or discount codes. That is, if the flight was from Europe. In the rest of the situations you must refer to Turkish Airlines cancellation policy.

If you haven’t received anything, contact Turkish Airlines.

Most likely they will offer you a new flight or refund.

If it is their fault, you may also be entitled to compensation.

More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

Have you gone through airport security?

If you have — see if it is possible to go back to the landside of the airport. If it is possible and you don’t have checked luggage, go back to the landside. Because if your flight is cancelled, there will be a new flight and you will have to check in once again. If you have checked luggage, wait for an announcement from Turkish Airlines. You will have to collect your luggage first.

Wait for an announcement from your airline.

They will tell you what should you do next.

If you have not — don’t do it for now.

Because you may not fly anywhere today.

It might be impossible to find a new flight today. So it is a better idea at first just to wait for an announcement from your airline, be it Turkish Airlines or any other airline.

Do you have a connecting flight?

If it’s a connecting flight with Turkish Airlines, you are protected.

Turkish Airlines is a traditional, full service airline, and as a such it offers protected connecting flights. For you it means that you are protected against flight delays and cancellations. If due to one delay or cancellation you miss another flight, Turkish Airlines will take care of that by putting you on another flight for free.

All you have to do is contact Turkish Airlines ground stuff at the airport.

If it is a self transfer flight — it is your responsibility.

5. Turkish Airlines denied boarding compensation

Generally speaking, rules are almost the same.

According to the Regulation EC 261/2004, you are entitled to flight compensation not only if your flight is delayed or cancelled, but also if you are denied boarding due to overbooking. To put it simply, if you aren’t allowed to board a plane simply because there are no more free seats, you should be receiving EU denied boarding compensation.

Also, the compensation amounts are identical and affected only by the distance of the flight. Which means that your Turkish Airlines overbooking compensation will be the same as your Turkish Airlines compensation for delayed flights.

With Turkish Airlines it applies to all its flights from Europe.

Compensation amounts are fixed — 250, 400 or 600 euro.

And you can get both — a flight or refund and a compensation.

Don’t forget that this applies only to overbooking.

If there were problems with your passport or travel documents, and that was the reason why you were denied boarding, then you will not be entitled to compensation. You also can’t get compensation from Turkish Airlines if you voluntarily give up your seat and agree to take another flight. Take this into account if you will be offered such a choice.

6. Turkish Airlines connecting flights

Turkish Airlines is one of the biggest airlines in the world.

Up until August 2019 it was flying to 315 destinations all around the world, making it the largest airline in the world by number of passenger destinations. According to Skytrax, Turkish Airlines is a 3-star airline. It’s a full service airline, and as a such it offers airline protected connecting flights.

What it means for you is convenience and protection.

Even if you have several flights (a connecting flight), you have to check in only once. Your luggage is being taken to your final destination. You don’t have to collect it and re-check it. And if there is a problem with your flight, the airline takes care of that. According to the Turkish Airlines missed connection policy, as long as it isn't your fault, the airline helps you to find a new flight to your destination.

If, for example, your first flight is cancelled and because of that you miss the next flight, Turkish Airlines will offer you to take another flight to your destination completely for free. You will not have to do anything — neither look for another flight, nor pay for it.

You can book them directly or on flight booking sites.

By Europe and EU we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

Remember, whenever your Turkish Airlines flight is delayed, cancelled or you have been denied boarding - you might be entitled to flight compensation. File a claim to get it sorted out right away!
