1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Your flight is delayed. What should you do?

Could you be entitled to Oman Air compensation? There are two most likely scenarios. But the most important thing in both of these scenarios is to find out what is the check in status for your flight. Even if you have already checked in online. Read on to learn more.

1.1 If you are still at home

You may have received an e-mail from the airline.

Or you have checked your flight status online and that’s how you found out that your flight will be delayed. OK, but what now? The most important thing is to find out if you need to go to the airport now or later. Just find out what is the check in status for your flight. Even if you have already checked in online. It’s important to know whether the check in is postponed or not.

This way you will know when to leave for the airport.

If check in is going to be delayed, wait for a while.

Wait at home/hotel for a while. Don’t go to the airport.

If check in isn't delayed, go to the airport as normally.

Do everything as you would normally do.

Do you have another flight you may miss?

Do you need to worry about your connecting flight? It depends on the type of your connection. If it’s an airline-protected connecting flight, you are protected. The airline will take care of you in case of missed connection. If necessary, you will be put on another flight completely for free. If you have booked your flights separately, then buying a new ticket is your responsibility. Flights like these are called self transfer flights.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

You are at the airport, ready to embark on a trip.

But unfortunately, you are not going anywhere yet. Your flight is late, and it may be a long delay… What now? Find out if check in for your flight has started already.

If check in hasn’t started, for now just wait.

If check in is postponed, be ready for a long delay. Your flight may also be cancelled altogether. It may still happen. That’s why it is better to wait for a while in the public access (landside) area. Until you see that the check in for your flight starts.

If check has started, that’s a good sign.

You can check in and proceed through airport security.

Delay may also turn out to be shorter than planned.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

Oman Air is an Omani airline.

Despite that, on some flights you are protected by the EU.

If you have to wait at a European airport because of a disrupted Oman Air flight, there are some things you should know. In case of waiting for 3+ hours extra, you have a right to care from the airline. Oman Air has to provide you with two free phone calls or e-mails and also a free meal and drink.

This applies to all Oman Air delays (departing from the EU).

All passengers on these flights are equally protected.

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If the delay is longer, you may also get a hotel room.

Oman Air has to offer you free hotel room and free transfer.

Everyone has the right to this type of care.

1.3 If it is fault of Oman Air

That includes things like technical problems and staff shortage.

In this case, you may also be entitled to EU flight delay compensation.

Have you experienced a flight delay?

If you have — file a compensation claim.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

Your flight is cancelled. What should you do?

Will you be offered a new flight? Will this be for free? In what situations can you ask for compensation from Oman Air, and what are the rules?

2.1 If you are still at home

You need to find out what’s happening next.

Contact Oman Air, if they haven’t yet contacted you.

Generally speaking, if you are flying from the EU with a non-EU airline, you are still protected under the EU law. In case of cancelled flight, the airline must offer you a new flight or full refund. You have a right to request a refund if you don’t want to take an alternative flight offered by Oman Air. If, for example, it doesn’t fit your travel plans. That’s your right to choose.

If cancellation is due to the fault of the airline, you may have a right to compensation. More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

What if you are at the airport when you learn of it?

Your flight is cancelled. The most important thing to remember — don’t go through airport security. Since your flight is cancelled, there will be a new flight. Oman Air must offer you a new flight to your destination as soon as possible. As you will have to check in for that new flight, you have to stay at the public access area (also called landside area) of the airport. That’s where all check in counters are located.

Try to get in touch with the representatives of Oman Air.

You need to find out what’s happening next.

Ask for a refund, if you don’t want to take any flight anymore.

A red alarm clock

- 3 hour flight delay

Oman Air is an airline registered in Oman.

Despite that, on many flights you are protected by the EU.

If you have to wait at the airport, due to delay, cancellation or overbooking, you have a right to care from the airline. The airline has to provide you with two free phone calls or e-mails and also a free meal and drink.

Cancellations due to extraordinary circumstances?

This applies to all Oman Air cancellations (from the EU).

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

In this case you have a right to free accommodation.

Free hotel stay and free transfer has to be offered to you if you face a long wait/delay. It is the airline's responsibility, and every passenger has a right to this type of care. However, as it is assessed case by case, the airline may decide not to provide free accommodation. For example, the wait is not so long, and there are just too many affected passengers (too many to serve everyone in time). And then the airline may decide not to provide free hotel stays.

2.3 If it is fault of Oman Air

That includes things like technical problems and bad planning.

If that causes a cancellation, it is considered fault of the airline.

And you may also be entitled to EU flight cancellation compensation.

- Does it apply only to citizens of the European Union?

The whole process takes about 2 or 3 months.

If you are claiming compensation yourself and the airline denies compensation even if you are entitled to it, the process will take longer. You may need to take your case to court. It will add a couple of months (or even more) to the whole process.

- How far back can you claim flight cancellation compensation?

You can get compensation also for your old flights.

It depends on the laws of the country you are flying from.

In most situations, you can file a claim up to 2-3 years after the day of cancellation. However, the sooner you do it, the better and the higher chance of success.

- Does it apply only to citizens of the European Union?

No, every passenger in the EU is protected under the law.

Even tourists from countries outside the EU. The rules are the same for everyone. When it comes to flight delays, flight cancellations and denied boarding, you don't have to be European to have these rights. You don’t have to be European to receive European flight compensation.

- How much can you claim?

The amounts are regulated by the EU.

Here is how much you can claim for your flight:

  • €250 — if the distance of your flight is up to 1500 kilometres;
  • €400 — if the distance is between 1500 to 3500 kilometres;
  • €600 — if the distance is more than 3500 kilometres.

These amounts are per passenger. They are exactly the same for all passengers travelling on the same flight. No matter the nationality, airline the passenger is flying with, price of the ticket or travel insurance. Even infants can receive full flight compensation.

5. How to claim Oman Air denied boarding compensation?

You may get denied boarding even if you have a valid ticket.

Denied boarding happens similar as often as delays and cancellations. It’s when airline sells more tickets than there are seats, and when “too many” people actually show up for the flight. So, remember this — whenever you are denied boarding against your will, you have a right to EU denied boarding compensation.

In case of Oman Air, these rules apply to their flights from Europe.

Compensation amounts are fixed — 250, 400 or 600 euro.

And in most cases, you can get both — a new flight or refund and compensation.

Keep in mind that it applies only to overbooking. If there are problems with your travel documents, your passport expires soon, or if you voluntarily give up your seat, and agree to fly later on another flight offered by the airline, then you won’t be entitled to any compensation from Oman Air. That’s the rules, in short.
