1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Flight delays happen every day. And Norwegian isn’t an exception.

Not surprisingly, though, when you know that it’s the same airline that’s been receiving so many complains from its UK passengers.

Here is what you should do if your Norwegian flight is delayed.

1.1 If you are still at home

First of all, check your Norwegian Air flight status.

In order to do so go to the website of the airport you are flying from.

Next - try and find out what is the reason why your flight is delayed.

FlightStats and Flightradar24 will help you with this task.

Check out the website of the airport one more time to see if your flight is the only one that's delayed.

If there are many others that are delayed, it’s possible that there is some bigger issue - like storm or heavy snow - and it’s a better idea to stay at home for a while. If yours is the only one or one of the few, stay at home a bit longer and then proceed as planned. Unless, of course, delay is extra long.

In all situations when you have connecting flights booked separately, that you may miss because of this delay, you will have to decide what to do next. In situations when your flights are booked via Norwegian, there is nothing to worry about. Because Norwegian will take care of that and, if necessary, you’ll be put on another flight at no extra cost.

If this delay turns out to be the airline’s fault, you may also be entitled to Norwegian Air delayed flight compensation.

You'll make a claim for Norwegian compensation later.

Scroll down to learn more about it.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

If the check in is open, go to Norwegian check in counter.

And proceed through the airport security right afterwards. Or proceed through the security, if you have already checked in.

If you have another flight or flights (or plans in general), that this delay is going to affect, make a plan now. If you have a connecting flight booked via Norwegian, you have nothing to worry about. Because the airline will take care of that. If necessary, they will re-book you on another flight at no extra cost.

If, however, it's a flight booked separately, then it's a bit more difficult.

If you have travel insurance, call the company now to ask what to do next. If you don’t - mostly you will have to deal with the situation yourself. And pay for all the extra expenses that may occur from your pocket.

Make a plan, and wait for more information.

Follow your flight's status either online or by checking the flight information screens at the airport. Contact information desk at the airport, if you don’t understand information available to you.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

According to EU regulations, in most of situations (there are a few exceptions) when your flight is delayed and you have to wait at the airport for 3+ hours, your airline must provide you with a free meal and drink plus two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes.

All passengers have the right to care.

Mostly it’s gonna be provided in a form of coupons.

When travelling with Norwegian the same applies also to all flights from countries outside the European Union heading for the EU.

- Long delay (overnight delay)

In case of an even longer delay, when you have to wait overnight, free hotel accommodation and transport to and from it must be provided by Norwegian.

Plus free meals and drinks.

Every passenger is eligible to this type of care by Norwegian.

No matter the cause of the flight delay and either is within our out of the airline’s control, if it’s something airline should have dealt with or it’s so called extraordinary circumstances.

It applies to all your Norwegian flights to, from or within Europe. It applies to all Norwegian delays.

1.3 If it's fault of Norwegian

If it’s fault of Norwegian not something extraordinary, that your flight is heavily delayed, you may as well get Norwegian flight delay compensation up to €600 per passenger.

Yes, you got it right.

You could be getting all of that - free accommodation and food, being taken to your destination (or given a full refund) plus flight delay compensation, which depending on the total flight distance may go up to 600 euro.

The longer your journey, the bigger your Norwegian delay compensation.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

What to do if your Norwegian flight is cancelled?

2.1 If you are still at home

You have got an email from Norwegian saying that your flight is cancelled.

According to EU regulations, whenever your flight is cancelled, it’s the airline’s fault and you are notified last-minute, you may also get a flight cancellation compensation up to €600.

  • If it’s less than 14 days until the date of departure and Norwegian cancels flight, mostly you’ll be entitled to flight cancellation compensation. Remember that and don’t forget to file a claim later!
  • If it’s more than 14 days until the date of departure. If your flight is cancelled more than 2 weeks before the flight, you’ll not be entitled to flight cancellation compensation. But it doesn’t mean that you are not entitled to anything at all, as mostly airline still has an obligation to take you to destination or give you a full refund.

In both situations read this email you have received carefully.

Because most probably that’s where you'll find the answers to the most important questions you have right now - what has happened and what should you do next. Mostly you will be offered a new flight to your destination with Norwegian or sometimes with another airline, at no extra cost. You may as well ask for a full refund in cash.

What if you haven’t received anything from Norwegian?

You may have learned about it from the website of the airport.

Then you’ll have to wait for one, if there is time. Or contact the Norwegian's call centre or Norwegian customer service on Twitter or Facebook.

These rules apply to all Norwegian flights to, from or within Europe.

And, yes, you can get both - a new flight to your destination or full refund and a flight cancellation compensation up to €600.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

If you haven’t checked in yet, don't do anything just yet.

Wait for the announcement regarding your Norwegian cancellation.

If you have checked in and gone through airport security, find a place where to sit down and wait for the announcement. There is no need to go back just yet. If you can, check your email. There is a small chance there will be already an email from Norwegian explaining the situation. If there is no email, keep checking flight information screens or contact Norwegian.

Do you have another flight you may miss now?

If there isn’t any, you’ll just have to wait.

If you have a connecting flight, this might be the right time to go through your itinerary once again to see if there are some adjustments necessary.

If you have a connecting flight with Norwegian, booked via Norwegian, then there is nothing to worry about. The airline will deal with it. And, if necessary, they will put you on another flight free of charge. In case of a connecting flight that you have booked separately, you will have to deal with all the consequences yourself.

A red alarm clock

- 3 hour flight delay

Norwegian has offered you a new flight few hours later.

If you’ll have to wait at the airport for more than 3 hours, the airline has to provide you with free meal and drink plus two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. In most of situations it means that you’ll be given a coupon.

If nothing is being offered, demand it by contacting the Norwegian staff at the airport.

Speaking of the flight, in some situations it’s going to be a new Norwegian flight, in other - flight with another airline. In both situations you will not have to pay anything extra. Despite the fact that it might be a better flight on a better plane.

- Long delay

Not always it’s possible to find a quick solution, so there are situations when you have to wait for more than a few hours.

What are you entitled to in these situations?

If you are at the airport and it’s going to be an overnight delay, Norwegian has to provide you with free hotel accommodation, transport to and from hotel, plus food and drinks.

Sometimes there will be no choice, other times you’ll be give a choice of two or more flights. One might be on the same day, another - on the next day. You are free to choose what you like the most. In no way it’s going to affect your chances of getting a flight cancellation compensation later. So, just choose what’s best for you right now.

Everyone’s entitled to this type of care by Norwegian. No matter the cause of the flight cancellation.

Apart from that Norwegian, same like all commercial airlines operating in EU, still have an obligation to get you to destination or give you a full refund.

2.3 If it's fault of Norwegian

And, yes, you can get both - a flight and a compensation.

Note that instead of a new flight to your destination you can also choose to have a full refund. This refund, same like your Norwegian compensation, has to be paid to your bank account. You don't have to accept coupons or travel vouchers.

5. Norwegian denied boarding compensation

All in all, rules are very similar.

It applies to all Norwegian flights to, from or within EU.

If you are travelling with a non-EU airline it applies only to flights within and from Europe. But since Norwegian is a European airline, these rules apply to all their flights.

By Europe and EU we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

Your citizenship doesn’t matter. You don’t have to be European to be entitled to EU denied boarding compensation.

The amount of compensation also is the same - up to €600 per passenger. No matter the age of the passenger and whether the ticket cost 4 or 400 euro. It doesn’t affect the amount of compensation.

And you can get both - a new flight or full refund and a compensation.

The one thing you should remember is that you can’t voluntarily give up your seat and later file a claim for denied boarding compensation. It should be, so called, involuntary denied boarding. If you agree to voluntarily give up your seat, the airline (most probably) will offer you a compensation of some sort right away. It’s the only compensation you’ll be eligible to.

And, of course, if you’ve been denied boarding because there is an issue with your travel documents, you also will not be entitled to compensation.

Only overbooking counts in this case.

Don't forget! When things like this happen, don’t forget to ask Norwegian staff at the airport what should you do next. They still should take you to your destination.

About Norwegian

Norwegian is a budget airline with its headquarters in Fornebu, Norway.

Norwegian is Norway’s largest airline, and third largest low-cost airline in Europe. The airline was founded in 1993, and until 2002 it was a regional airline. From 2002 it started to operate as a budget airline. Initially, the airline operated Fokker F-50 turbo-prop aircraft on its routes, switching to the Boeing 737-300 jet in 2002.

The airline has received many awards. And that’s one of the reasons why Norwegian is so popular.

Norwegian was named “World's Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline” for four consecutive years. It’s also Europe's Best Low-Cost Airline, according to Skytrax.

Some sources have named Norwegian as an airline with the best on board WiFi in Europe.

The airline offers free WiFi on board, even for its economy passengers. What’s even better, taking into account that Norwegian is a low-cost airline, is that in-flight entertainment is also free for everyone. However, checked baggage and meals are not included in the price of economy class passenger tickets.

Norwegian is well known for its cheap flights to the United States and Thailand.
