1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Your flight is delayed. What should you do?

It depends on where you are when you find out that your flight was delayed. It also depends on the length of the delay. Let’s talk about some of the most likely scenarios.

1.1 If you are still at home

You haven’t left for the airport yet.

But you have found out that your flight was delayed. Either you have received an e-mail saying that your flight is delayed, or you have checked your flight status online. What should you do next? Call the airline and find out what is happening with check-in. Is it going to be postponed or not. It is important, even if you have checked-in already. Thus you’ll know when you have to be at the airport.

If check in is going to be delayed, wait for a while.

If check in isn't delayed, go to the airport as normally.

Do you have another flight you may miss?

It depends on the type of your connecting flight. If it’s an airline-protected connecting flight, you have nothing to worry about. The airline will solve this problem and, if necessary, will put you on another flight for free. If it’s not an airline protected transfer (you’ve booked your flights separately), the airline won’t help you with that and you will have to book a new flight yourself. Flights like these are called self transfer flights.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

What if you have found out about the delay right after you’ve arrived in the airport? Has check-in started already? Go to the check-in desk and find out.

If check in hasn’t started, for now just wait.

If check in hasn’t started yet, there is a chance that your flight may also get cancelled. That’s why we recommend to just wait a while. Until check in for your flight starts.

If check has started, that’s a good sign.

Check in for your flight and go through airport security.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

Luxair is a European airline.

And that means you are protected by the EU.

You should know a few things. If you have to wait at the airport, you can receive help from the airline. In case of 3+ hour delay, you have a right to care from the airline. Luxair must offer you two free phone calls or e-mails (or internet access) and also a free meal and drink.

This applies to all Luxair flights and all passengers.

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If the delay is longer, you may also get a hotel room.

Luxair has to offer you free hotel room and free transfer.

Everyone has the right to this type of care.

1.3 If it is fault of Luxair

That includes things like technical problems and staff shortage.

In this case, you may also be entitled to EU flight delay compensation.

If you have — file a compensation claim.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

Your flight is cancelled. What should you do?

Will you be provided with a ticket for a new flight? Will it be offered for free? In what situations can you ask for compensation from Luxair?

2.1 If you are still at home

You need to find out what’s happening next.

Contact Luxair, if they haven’t yet contacted you.

Generally speaking, passengers in the EU are protected under the EU law. This makes everything very simple. If your flight is cancelled, the airline has to offer you a new flight or full refund. And you are the one who makes a choice. You have a right to request a full refund if you do not wish to travel on an alternative flight offered by Luxair. If it doesn’t fit your travel plans, ask for a refund!

If it’s fault of the airline, you may have a right to compensation.

More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

Stay in the landside area of the airport.

Don’t go through the airport security yet.

Why? The reason is very simple. As your flight is cancelled, there will be a new flight. Luxair must offer you a new flight to your destination as soon as possible. You will need to check-in for that flight. So that’s why it is important to stay in the landside area of the airport until the check-in starts. Get in touch with the representatives of Luxair to find out what to do next.

Ask for a refund, if you don’t want to take the flight you are offered. Thanks to the EU laws, you have such rights.

A red alarm clock

- 3 hour flight delay

Luxair is an airline registered in the EU.

And that means you are protected by the EU.

If due to delay, cancellation or overbooking a passenger has to wait at the airport, there are certain rules the airline has to comply with. In these cases and if the waiting time is 3 or more hours, you have a right to care from the airline. The airline must offer you two free phone calls or e-mails (or internet access) and also a free meal and drink.

Cancellations due to extraordinary circumstances?

This applies to all flight cancellations of Luxair.

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If you have to wait overnight, you have a right to free accommodation.

You must be offered a free stay at a hotel, plus a free transfer to the hotel and back to the airport. Every passenger has a right to receive these services for free from the airline. However, there are exceptions. For example, the waiting time is 6 hours, and it would take 2-3 hours to take everyone to a hotel. It doesn’t really make a sense to do it, right? In this case, you may not be offered free hotel stay.

2.3 If it is fault of Luxair

That includes things like technical problems and bad planning.

If that causes a cancellation, it is considered fault of the airline.

And you may also be entitled to EU flight cancellation compensation.

Have you experienced a flight cancellation?

If you have — file a compensation claim.

- How far back can you claim flight delay compensation?

You can get compensation for old flights as well.

In most countries in the EU, you can ask for compensation even if the disruption happened already 2 or 3 years ago. However, we would recommend you to file a claim right after your trip (as soon as possible). In this case, you’ll have a better chance of getting compensation.

The EU law protects all passengers.

If you are a tourist from outside the EU, you are protected under the EU law, too. You don't have to be European to have these rights.

- How much can you claim?

The longer the flight, the more you can claim.

You can get 250, 400 or 600 euro per passenger (depending on the distance). Even infants can receive full flight compensation if the flight is delayed for 3+ hours due to the fault of the airline.

- Does it apply only to citizens of the European Union?

No, this law protects everyone, even tourists from overseas.

The rules are the same for everyone. You don't have to be European to have these rights and to receive European flight compensation.

- How much can you claim?

The longer the flight, the more you can claim.

The amounts are regulated by the Regulation EC 261/2004.

Here is how much you can claim:

  • €250 — if the distance of your flight is up to 1500 kilometres;
  • €400 — if the distance is between 1500 to 3500 kilometres;
  • €600 — if the distance is more than 3500 kilometres.

The amounts listed are per passenger. Doesn't matter what’s the nationality of the passenger, the airline they are flying with, the price of the ticket or travel insurance. Even infants can receive full flight compensation if the flight is cancelled due to fault of the airline.

5. How to claim Luxair denied boarding compensation?

You may get denied boarding even if you have a valid ticket.

It happens. If your flight is overbooked, you may be asked to give up your seat. You can agree to that. But keep in mind that if you decide to voluntarily give up your seat, then you can’t get compensation. If your flight is overbooked (the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats), and you are denied boarding because of that, you have a right to receive EU denied boarding compensation.

With Luxair it applies to all their flights to and from Europe.

Compensation amounts are — 250, 400 or 600 euro.

And mostly you can get both — a new flight or refund and compensation.

It applies only to overbooking. If there are problems with your travel documents or visa, or your passport expires, then you won’t be entitled to any compensation from Luxair. You can’t get compensation also when you give up your seat voluntarily.
