1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Your flight is delayed. What should you do?

Could you be entitled to Kenya Airways delayed flight compensation for this flight? There are two most likely scenarios. Your action plan depends on your location. We talk about compensation and refunds further below.

1.1 If you are still at home

You have find out that your flight is going to be late.

You have received an e-mail notifying about the delay, or you have checked flight status online. What’s going to happen now? Do you need to stay at home or go to the airport? First, you have to find out what is the check in status for your flight. Even if you have already checked in online. Only then you’ll know what to do.

If check in is going to be delayed, wait for a while.

If check in isn't delayed, go to the airport as planned.

It’s better to do like this. So, you don’t miss anything.

Do you have another flight you may miss?

Do you need to worry about your connection? Well, it depends on the type of your connecting flight. If it’s an airline-protected connecting flight, you don’t need to worry. The airline will book you another flight completely for free. If you have two or more separately booked flights, you are not entitled to any free tickets, even if you miss your connecting flight. Flights like these are called self transfer flights.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

Are you already at the airport?

In this situation, you also need to find out what is the check in status for your flight. Has check in for your flight started already? If not, is it going to be delayed?

If check in hasn’t started, for now just wait.

If check in is postponed, there is a chance that it will be a long delay. Or your flight may also get cancelled. Flights get cancelled for a number of reasons. That’s why it’s better to just wait for a while. Until you see that the check in for your flight starts.

If check has started, that’s a good sign.

You can check in and proceed through airport security.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

Kenya Airways is a Kenyan airline.

Even though the airline is not registered in the EU, on some of their flights you are still protected by the EU. If you have to wait at the airport because of flight delay, flight cancellation or denied boarding, you may be entitled to certain services for free. In case of waiting for 3+ hours extra, you have a right to care from the airline. Kenya Airways has to provide you with two free phone calls or e-mails and also a free meal and drink.

Note that this applies only to Kenya Airways flights and passengers departing from the EU. Otherwise the Regulation EC 261/2004 won’t cover it.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If the delay is longer, you may also get a hotel room.

Kenya Airways has to offer you free hotel room and free transfer.

Everyone has the right to this type of care.

1.3 If it is fault of Kenya Airways

That includes things like technical problems and staff shortage.

In this case, you may also be entitled to EU flight delay compensation.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

Your flight is cancelled. What now?

Will the airline provide you with new tickets for free? Are you entitled to compensation from Kenya Airways? And what are the rules? What about Kenya Airways refund for cancellation?

2.1 If you are still at home

You need to find out what’s happening next.

Contact Kenya Airways, if they haven’t contacted you yet. If your flight departs from the EU, you are under protection of the EU laws. Generally speaking, in the EU everything is very simple. If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you a new flight or full refund. You can choose either. You have a right to request a refund if you don’t want to take the alternative flight offered by your airline. Yes, you can request a refund and not take any other flight.

If cancellation is due to the fault of the airline, you may have a right to compensation. More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

Don’t go through the airport security just yet.

Instead stay at the public access area of the airport.

Since your flight is cancelled, the airline must provide you with a free ticket for the next available flight. And you will have to check in for that new flight. As you may already know, check in counters are located at the public access area of the airport, also known as the landside area. That’s why you need to stay there.

Try to get in touch with the representatives of Kenya Airways to learn what’s happening next. Ask for a refund, if you don’t want to take the new flight.

5. How to claim Kenya Airways denied boarding compensation?

You may get denied boarding even if you have a valid ticket.

It happens when an airline sells too many tickets. Yes, sometimes airlines sell more tickets than there are seats. And, if everyone shows up for the flight, someone has to be denied boarding. It is a common practice in the aviation industry. It is done to avoid losses. If your flight is overbooked, you may be asked to give up your seat and fly later (you’ll be given a free ticket). You can agree to that or decline the offer. Whenever you are denied boarding against your will, you have a right to EU denied boarding compensation.

With Kenya Airways, it applies only to their flights from Europe.

Compensation amounts are fixed — 250, 400 or 600 euro.

In most cases, you can get both — a new flight or refund and compensation.

Keep in mind that it only applies to overbooking. If there are problems with your travel documents, your passport expires soon, or if you voluntarily give up your seat, then you won’t be entitled to any compensation from Kenya Airways for this boarding denial.
