1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Your flight is delayed. What should you do?

You have found out that your flight is delayed. Are you still at home or already at the airport? Your action plan depends on your location. Read on to find out.

1.1 If you are still at home

You are still at home or your hotel.

You have received an email informing you about the delay. Or you just have checked your flight status online, and that’s how you have found out about the delay. What now? The only thing you have to do is to find out, when check in for your flight will start. Even if you have checked in online already. Thus you will know when to head for the airport.

If check in is going to be delayed, stay at home/hotel.

If check in isn't delayed, go to the airport as normally.

Do you have another flight you may miss?

There are two most likely scenarios. If you have booked an airline-protected connecting flight, you don’t have to worry about anything. The airline will put you on another flight completely for free. But if you have booked your flights separately, this is your responsibility. Flights like these are called self transfer flights. In this case, the airline/airlines you are flying with are not responsible for your missed connection.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

You have arrived at the airport ready to board your flight.

But, unfortunately, you are not going anywhere. At least, not now. You have found out that your flight is delayed. What now? Find out if check in for your flight has started already.

If check in hasn’t started, for now just wait.

If your flight is delayed, check in may also be delayed. This delay can be long, or your flight might even be cancelled altogether. That’s why it’s better to just wait for a while, until check in desks open.

If check has started, that’s a good sign.

Check in for your flight (if you haven’t already done it online) and proceed through airport security. Do everything as you would normally do.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

El Al Israel Airlines is an Israeli airline.

Despite that, on some of their flights you are protected by the EU.

If your El Al flight departing from the EU is disrupted, you don’t have to worry about anything as you are protected under the EU law. If you have to wait at the airport 3+ hours for the next available flight, you have a right to receive care from the airline. El Al has to provide you with two free phone calls or e-mails and also a free meal and drink.

This applies to all El Al flights departing from the EU.

All El Al passengers are equally protected.

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If the delay is longer, you may also get a hotel room.

El Al has to offer you free hotel room and free transfer.

Everyone has the right to this type of care.

1.3 If it is fault of El Al Israel Airlines

That includes things like technical problems and staff shortage.

In this case, you may also be entitled to EU flight delay compensation.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

Your flight is cancelled. What should you do?

Will you be given a new flight ticket? Will you have to pay for it? In what situations can you ask for compensation from El Al Israel Airlines? What about refund?

2.1 If you are still at home

You need to find out what’s happening next.

Contact El Al Israel Airlines, if they haven’t yet contacted you.

Generally speaking, if you are flying from or within the EU with El Al, you are protected under the EU law. The Regulation EC 261/2004 is what makes it possible. It establishes rules on flight compensation and assistance to passengers in case of disrupted flights. According to this regulation, if your El Al fight is cancelled, the airline must offer you a new flight free of charge or a full refund. You have a right to request a refund if you don’t want to take the alternative flight offered by El Al Israel Airlines.

If your flight is cancelled due to the fault of the airline, you may have a right to compensation. More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

Stay at the landside area of the airport.

Don’t go through the airport security just yet.

Since your flight is cancelled, there will be a new flight. And you’ll need to check in for that new flight at the landside area of the airport. This is where all check in counters are located. El Al must offer you a new flight your destination as soon as possible. If it’s a flight from Europe, ask for a refund, if you don’t want to take the new flight.

A red alarm clock

- 3 hour flight delay

El Al is an airline registered in Israel.

Despite that, on some of their flights you are protected by the EU.

Let’s assume, your El Al flight departing from the EU is cancelled, and you have to wait at the airport 3+ hours until departure of your new flight. According to the Regulation EC 261/2004, if you have to wait at the airport, due to delay, cancellation or denied boarding, you have a right to care from the airline. The airline has to provide you with two free phone calls or e-mails and also a free meal and drink.

Cancellations due to extraordinary circumstances?

This applies to all El Al cancelled flights departing from the EU.

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

In this case you have a right to free accommodation.

A free hotel stay and free transfer has to be offered by El Al. It is the airline's responsibility, and every passenger has a right to this type of care. However, as it’s assessed case by case, not always it’s possible. For example, if the delay is not too long, and there are just too many affected passengers to do it in time, the airline may decide not to provide a free hotel stay.

2.3 If it is fault of El Al Israel Airlines

That includes things like technical problems and bad planning.

If that causes a cancellation, it is considered fault of the airline.

And you may also be entitled to EU flight cancellation compensation.
