1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Your flight is delayed. What should you do?

There are two most likely scenarios. In both of these scenarios, it is important to find out how long will be the delay and what is happening with check in.

1.1 If you are still at home

The most important thing is to avoid being stuck at the airport.

That’s why you should find out what is the check in status for your flight, even if you have checked in online already. Thus, you’ll know when to leave for the airport.

If check in is going to be delayed, wait for a while.

If check in isn't delayed, go to the airport as normally.

Do you have another flight you may miss?

What should you do if you miss your connecting flight? Well, it depends on your connection. If it’s an airline-protected connecting flight, you are protected. The airline will take care of you, and if necessary you will be put on another flight for free. If it’s a separately booked flight, this is your responsibility. Flights like the latter are called self transfer flights.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

Are you at the airport already?

Upon arrival at the airport you’ve found out that your flight has been delayed. What now? Has check in for your flight started already?

If check in hasn’t started, for now just wait.

It may be a long delay. Or your flight may even get cancelled at some point. That’s why it’s better to just wait for a while, until check in for your flight starts.

If check has started, that’s a good sign.

You can check in and proceed through airport security.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

Czech Airlines is a European airline.

And that means you are protected by the EU law.

If you have to wait at the airport due to delay, cancellation or overbooking, you are entitled to receive some services for free. If the waiting time is at least 3 hours, you have a right to care from the airline. Czech Airlines has to provide you with two free phone calls or e-mails (or internet access) and also a free meal and drink.

This applies to all Czech Airlines flights and all passengers.

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If the delay is longer, you may also get a hotel room.

Czech Airlines has to offer you free hotel room and free transfer.

Everyone has the right to this type of care.

1.3 If it is fault of Czech Airlines

That includes things like technical problems and staff shortage.

In this case, you may also be entitled to EU flight delay compensation.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

Your flight is cancelled. What should you do?

Will you be offered a new flight for free? In what situations can you ask for compensation from Czech Airlines? What about Czech Airlines refund for cancellation?

2.1 If you are still at home

You need to find out what’s happening next.

Contact Czech Airlines, if they haven’t contacted you already. As Czech Airlines is a EU airline, you are protected under the EU law. The airline must provide you a new flight or full refund. You can choose either. You have a right to request a refund if you don’t want to take the new flight. If it’s fault of the airline, you may have a right to compensation.

More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

Don’t go through the airport security just yet.

As your flight is cancelled, you will be put on another flight. And you will have to check in for that new flight. So, don’t go through the airport security just yet. Another thing you can do is to try to get in touch with the representatives of Czech Airlines, to learn what’s happening next, what’s their plan in this situation.

Ask for a refund, if you don’t want to fly anymore.

Sometimes the airline may decide not to provide free hotel stays for affected passengers — if that just doesn’t make sense (if it’s not doable and/or would make the whole situation worse).

2.3 If it is fault of Czech Airlines

That includes things like technical problems and bad planning.

If that causes a cancellation, it is considered fault of the airline.

5. How to claim Czech Airlines denied boarding compensation?

You may get denied boarding even if you have a valid ticket.

It happens when a flight is overbooked. It is when an airline sells more tickets than there are seats, in hope that someone won’t show up. But sometimes all the passengers show up for their flight. This is when you may get denied boarding. If your flight is overbooked, you may be asked to give up your seat. You can agree to that, and travel on another flight offered by the airline, or you may refuse that. If you are denied boarding against your will, you have a right to EU denied boarding compensation.

With Czech Airline it applies to flights to and from Europe.

Compensation amounts are fixed — 250, 400 or 600 euro.

And mostly you can get both — a new flight and compensation.

It applies only to overbooking. If there are problems with your travel documents, your passport expires soon, or if you voluntarily give up your seat, then you won’t be entitled to denied boarding compensation from Czech Airline.
