1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

It has happened. Your Austrian Airlines flight is delayed.

What should you do now?

1.1 If you are still at home

If you are still at home or hotel, don't go anywhere yet.

First check your flight status online, to find out, if possible, how long is this delay going to be. Go to the website of the airport you are flying from. Alternatively you can use sites like Flightstats and Flightradar24. Next find out if the check in has been postponed as well. Contact your airline or airport. So, you know if to wait or proceed to the airport as planned.

If check in is happening later, stay at home or hotel for a while.

If check in is not postponed, proceed as planned.

Do you have another flight today?

If it’s a connecting flight with Austrian Airlines, you can relax.

Because if you miss a connecting flight with full service airline like Austrian Airlines, you are protected. If necessary you will be put on another flight completely for free. The airline will take care of that.

If it is a self transfer flight — it is your responsibility.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

First of all, go and see if check in has started.

If it hasn’t started, try to find out if it is postponed.

If the check in counter is open and check in has started, there is no need to wait. Go and check in, and proceed to your gate as usually. Continue following the news regarding your flight. Be prepared that gate and departure time may change after some time.

If check in is postponed, wait for a while.

Even if you have already checked in online, wait until airport check in starts. Because there is still a possibility that your flight gets cancelled.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

Austrian Airlines is a European airline.

But that means, when you are travelling with it from or to Europe, and your flight is more than 3 hours late, you should be provided with two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes and with a free meal and drink.

It is Austrian Airlines responsibility to provide all of this.

Flying with non-EU airlines, the rules are slightly different.

All thanks to Europe's Flight Compensation Regulation EC 261/2004.

If you have not received any of that, contact Austrian Airlines.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

What if the delay is longer than that?

What if you have to wait at the airport overnight?

In this case the airline should provide you with free hotel accommodation.

Because that’s the rules in Europe, and they apply to all airlines operating in Europe. If you have to wait, your airline must take care of you. It doesn’t matter if you have a travel insurance or not, or how much does your ticket cost. All passengers have the right to care.

1.3 If it's fault of Austrian Airlines

What if this delay is due to Austrian Airlines fault?

You might be entitled to EU flight delay compensation.

If you file a claim, you may be receiving up to €600.

That is true in most cases when delay is 3 hours or more. If it is a shorter delay, for example, a 2 hour flight delay, then you may or may not be entitled to Austrian Airlines delayed flight compensation. It is worth noting that technical problems are considered airline’s fault.

What matters here is the time of your arrival to destination.

More exactly - the moment you are free to leave the airplane.

2. What to do if your flight is CANCELLED?

Your Austrian Airlines flight is cancelled.

What should you do next?

2.1 If you are still at home

Most likely you have received an e-mail from Austrian Airlines.

Read that e-mail carefully. This is where most likely you will find the answers to two most important questions right now — what exactly has happened, and what should you do now. In most situations you will have to choose between a new flight and refund.

That’s right — you can also ask for a full refund.

Even if the flight is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances.

When making a choice, don’t forget to take into account other travel plans you might have. Other flights, trains, buses or activities you may have booked for your trip. Remember also that your Austrian Airlines refund must be paid in cash or by bank transfer, not in coupons, miles or discount codes.

What if you haven’t received anything from your airline?

What if you learned of the cancellation while checking your flight status online? In this case contact your airline yourself. They must help you. Most likely you will be offered the same choice between a new flight and refund.

In any case — they should take you to your destination.

If it’s airline's fault, they may also owe you a compensation.

More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

Have you already gone through security?

If you have — keep following your Austrian Airlines flight status or, if you don’t have checked luggage and you can, go back to the landside of the airport. When a flight gets cancelled, the airline offers another flight that you have to check in for one more time. If you have checked in luggage, just wait for now. You will have to collect your luggage first.

If you have not gone through it — don’t do it for now.

There is a possibility that you will not fly today.

Even if you will fly today, it will be a new flight, and you will need to check in for that new flight. Maybe that new flight will be in a few hours, or maybe only after 12 hours. Sit down somewhere and wait, or contact your airline for more information. Be prepared that most likely you will have a choice between a new flight and full refund.

Do you have another flight today?

If it’s a connecting flight with Austrian Airlines, you can relax.

Because if you will miss it, Austrian Airlines will take care of that for free. You will be put on another flight at no extra cost to you. That’s how connecting flights with full service airlines work.

If it is a self transfer flight — it is your responsibility.

In this case, apart from the food and communication, the airline should provide you with free hotel accommodation.

Because that’s the rules in Europe, and they apply to all airlines operating in Europe. If you have to wait, your airline must take care of you. It doesn’t matter if you have a travel insurance or not, or how much does your ticket cost. All passengers have the right to care.

2.3 If it's fault of Austrian Airlines

What if this cancellation is due to Austrian Airlines fault?

You might be entitled to EU flight cancellation compensation.

If you file a claim, you may be receiving up to €600.

That is true in most cases when flight is cancelled less than 2 weeks or 14 days before the planned date of departure. If your flight is cancelled more than 2 weeks before the trip, you won’t be getting EU flight compensation. It is worth noting that technical problems are considered airline’s fault. Both your Austrian Airlines cancellation refund (if you choose it, not a new flight) and compensation have to be paid in cash or by bank transfer.
