1. What to do if your flight is DELAYED?

Your flight is delayed. What should you do?

Depends on the situation (see below). First of all, do not panic. You will get to your destination. Keep in mind, that if your Aeromexico flight departs from the EU, you are entitled to receive certain services from the airline. And, in some situations — flight delay compensation.

1.1 If you are still at home

Have you received an e-mail saying that your flight is delayed?

Or you have checked your flight status online and found out that your flight will be late? What now? You have to find out what is the check in status for your flight. Even if you have already checked in online, it’s important to know whether the check in is delayed or is it going to be on time. This way you will know when to leave for the airport.

If check in is going to be delayed, wait for a while.

If check in isn't delayed, go to the airport as normally.

Do you have another flight you may miss?

It depends on what kind of connecting flight have you booked. If you have an airline-protected connecting flight, you will be fine. The airline will take care of this issue, and if necessary (if you miss this connection), you will be issued a new ticket to your destination for free.

If you have booked two or more flights separately, this is your responsibility. These are called self transfer flights.

1.2 If you are already at the airport

Has check in for your flight started already?

If check in hasn’t started, for now just wait.

Why is it important to wait until the check in desk opens? When check in for your flight starts, it mostly means that your flight will depart soon (usually in a couple of hours time). But when check in is being postponed, there’s a possibility, that your flight may be cancelled.

If check has started, that’s a good sign.

In this case, check in for your flight and proceed through airport security, and go to your gate. If you have already checked in online, just proceed through airport security.

Clock on the wall

- 3 hour flight delay

Aeromexico is a Mexican airline.

Despite that, on many of their flights you are protected by the EU.

If your flight departs from the EU, and you have to wait at the airport for 3 or more hours, you have a right to care from the airline. The rules are the same for all Aeromexico flight delays, no matter the reason of the delay. Aeromexico has to provide you with two free phone calls or e-mails (or internet access) and also a free meal and drink.

This applies to all Aeromexico flights from the EU.

All passengers, regardless of their nationality, have a right to it.

All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If the delay is longer, you may also get a hotel room.

Aeromexico has to offer you free hotel room and free transfer.

This applies to all Aeromexico flights from the EU.

Everyone has the right to this type of care.

1.3 If it is fault of Aeromexico

Your flight is cancelled. What should you do?

Will there be a new flight? Will you be put on that flight for free? In what situations can you claim compensation from Aeromexico?

2.1 If you are still at home

You need to find out what’s happening next.

Contact Aeromexico, if they haven’t yet contacted you.

If your flight departs from the EU, Aeromexico must offer you a new flight or full refund. You may choose either option. You have a right to request a refund if you don’t want to take the alternative flight offered by Aeromexico. Speaking of the Aeromexico cancelled flight refund — for flights departing from the EU it has to be paid to your bank. You don’t have to accept coupons.

If it’s fault of the airline, you may have a right to compensation.

More on that further below.

2.2 If you are already at the airport

Try to get in touch with the representatives of Aeromexico.

You have to find out what’s happening next.

And don’t go through airport security yet.

As your initial flight is cancelled, you will be put on a new flight. And you will need to check in for that flight. Aeromexico will provide that flight for free. If you go through airport security, you will have to go back to the landside area of the airport so you can check in for your new flight. If you don’t wish to take the new flight offered by Aeromexico, you can ask for a refund (if a flight is from the EU, you can ask for a full refund to your bank account).

- 3 hour flight delay

Aeromexico is an airline registered in Mexico.

Despite that, on many of their flights you are protected by the EU.

Cancellations due to extraordinary circumstances?

This applies to all Aeromexico flights from the EU, to all Aeromexico flight cancellations. All thanks to Regulation EC 261/2004.

- Long delay (Overnight delay)

If you have to wait overnight, you have a right to free accommodation.

You have booked an Aeromexico fight that departs from the EU, and it’s cancelled last-minute. Your new flight departs only tomorrow. Do you have to spend the night at the airport? Normally, no, you don’t have to do that. In this case as well, you are protected by the EU. It’s the airline’s responsibility to provide you with a free hotel stay and transfer to the hotel and back to the airport.

However, in some situations you won’t get a free hotel stay and transfer. It’s assessed case by case. And the airline may decide not to provide that if, for example, the delay or waiting time is 6 hours, and it takes a minimum of 2-3 hours to take every affected passenger to the hotel.

2.3 If it is fault of Aeromexico

That includes things like technical problems and bad planning.

If that causes a cancellation, it is considered fault of the airline.

And you may also be entitled to EU flight cancellation compensation.

5. How to claim Aeromexico denied boarding compensation?

You may get denied boarding even if you have a valid ticket.

Denied boarding happens when an airline sells more tickets than there are seats, and every passenger shows up for the flight. If that happens to your flight, you too may be asked to give up your seat. You can give up your seat voluntarily, or you can refuse to do that. If you refuse, and you still are denied boarding, you are entitled to a EU denied boarding compensation.

Compensation amounts are fixed — 250, 400 or 600 euro.

And mostly you can get both — a new flight or refund and compensation.

With Aeromexico it applies to all their flights from Europe.

If you give up your seat voluntarily, you are not entitled to a compensation. If there are problems with your travel documents, visa or your passport expires soon, then you too won’t be entitled to any compensation from Aeromexico. The airline may offer you a compensation of some sort, but it isn’t their obligation to do so.
